Who We Are
La Cuna, Spanish for "cradle," was founded in 2003 as a non-profit foster family
agency to address the needs of Latino children in foster care. The founders decided
to place primary emphasis on the Latino population because there are major cultural
and linguistic gaps in services to this special foster population. Over the years
and due to the need, our new model of care has evolved and we now serve all children
ages 0 to 5. To date we have found loving foster homes for 88 babies, toddlers and
young sibling groups.
In our holistic approach to serving our foster children, we also address
the needs of the child's foster parents and biological parents. Culture and language
factors are important to respect when considering that many or most of our foster
children come from monolingual Spanish-speaking homes. Our program also emphasizes
keeping siblings together.
The La Cuna difference seems to lie in our targeted outreach methods, in-house specialized
foster parent training, maximum caseloads of 24 children per social worker, therapeutic
services to families, child advocacy work, our utilization of evidence - based practices,
and our mentoring of biological parents (when possible) to encourage that they gain additional parenting
skills in their efforts to reunify. Learn More »
